Did you go to an art school to study photography? And would you recommend to someone who wishes to pursue a career in photography?
I did not go to school for photography or any kind of art. I studied Computer Technology, because I’ve always loved computers and I figured that’d be a good stable “career choice”. But I’ve realized over the years that my true passion is with photography. I don’t think that you need to go to art school to become an artist. I think that it is something you are born with, even if you discover it later in life, it was always inside of you. You can’t teach creativity to someone, it just doesn’t work. You can teach techniques, technicalities, composition, etc., but being a true artist is something that comes from within and it isn’t learned in school. I think some people may benefit from art school, because it would help to bring out their creativity by being surrounded by like-minded people, but I do not think that it is a necessity for someone who wants to be an artist of any kind. If you want art to be a part of your life, to be your career, and you have real passion for it, you just need to find any way to make it part of your every day life and put all your creative energies in to it. This is something that I am working on myself, because eventually I do want to be a full time photographer.. Whether that involves hosting workshops, selling prints, shooting campaigns, weddings, etc. I just want it to consume my life and I will do everything I can to make that happen =). I think that anyone who wants to be a full time photographer, or even a part time photographer, should go for it, because if you have the love and drive for it, you are bound to get there eventually.
