"Religion is the opium of the masses. One of the worst facets of religion, aside from inciting violence and war because of zealotry, intolerance and fundamentalism, is that it induces people into a state of resigned acceptance. Some will accept their unjust circumstance and withstand oppression simply because they believe it is God’s will and that they should not attempt to resist. Some will accept humiliation and degradation because they believe it is their comeuppance for their sins. Some will accept languishing at the bottom of the social ladder because they believe their circumstances will improve in the afterlife. Religion holds the power to anesthetize people, to dull their minds into a state of illusion. They allow themselves to be spoon-fed with Biblical phrases and songs and regurgitate the words of Church leaders. They don’t reflect and think about what religion means, but take it as it is word for word. They don’t question."
